Festival Alkantara 2008 took place in Lisbon between 22 May and 8 June 2008. The festival presented 26 shows from all over the world in 17 venues and spaces throughout Lisbon. For two weeks, Lisbon became a unique place for dialogue between artists from different places and cultures.

Brief description of your organisation:
Alkantara festival opened in 1993 as a small dance platform called Danças na Cidade. Nowadays it is a bienal event, organised in partnership with a dozen of theatres and institutes in Lisbon and dedicated to all the performing arts. The program presents innovative work from all over the world. Between two festivals, alkantara develops projects for training, artistic research and intercultural exchange. Over the past ten years, hundreds of artists from all over the world have found at alkantara’s projects opportunities to meet, exchange experiences and create new works, not only in Lisbon, but also in Cape Verde, Maputo, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Girona, Cagliari, Kyoto, Beirut, Utrecht, Frankfurt, Brussels and other places.

Objectives (Maximum 50 Words):
Alkantara festival is one of Europe’s main performing arts festivals, known for its adventurous and innovative program, presenting artists from all over the world to a wide audience. The 2008 edition gives special attention to artists and projects from the mediterranean, witnesses of a region in constant change and dialogue.
Target Groups (Maximum 50 Words):
Alkantara festival is a unique meeting point for around 250 artists and 100 arts professionals from all over the world. It caters for an estimated audience of 20.000 spectators and is, indirectly, visible to many more people through national and international press, internet and TV broadcasts.
Activities (Maximum 130 Words):
Festival Alkantara 2008, as a whole, will be a unique place for dialogue between artists and cultures from all over the world. Eventual support by the Anna Lindh Foundation will be linked to the projects from the Mediterranean: “Move Out Loud” by Filipe Viegas (Portugal) and Brahim Sourny (Morocco). An innovative dance project for YouTube. Presentation and start on 22 May; ongoing throughout the festival. Co-produced by alkantara. “Un an après”,a dance performance inspired by the teachings and practices of sufism by Nacera Belazza (Algeria) on 28 and 29 May. “Yesterday’s Man”, a theatre performance about Beirut by Tiago Rodrigues (Portugal) and Rabih Mroué (Lebanon) from 27 till 30 May. Co-produced by alkantara. “harS”,a dance performance by Aydin Teker (Turkey) from 5 till 7 June. Co-produced by alkantara.

The festival is co-organised by several venues in Lisbon: Centro Cultural de Belém, Teatro São Luiz, Teatro Maria Matos, Culturgest, Fundação Oriente Museu, Fundação EDP. It is supported by the Ministery of Culture of Portugal and the City of Lisbon. Co-productions with Mediterranean artists include partnerships with Co11.org (Morocco), Bimeras (Turkey), Cia Rabih Mroué (Lebanon), Bomba Suicida (Portugal) and O Mundo Perfeito (Portugal).
